Renowned globally as a pinnacle of polo prowess, the Rajasthan Polo Club emerged from the amalgamation of the Jaipur State into the larger tapestry of Rajasthan in 1957.
Originating as the Jaipur Polo Club in 1918, this esteemed institution drew its members predominantly from the realms of Jodhpur and Jaipur Riyasat. Nestled adjacent to the Jaipur Club, near the present-day Ganapati Nagar, it stood as a testament to the artistry and passion of sport. With the passage of time, the club's reputation only soared, solidifying its standing as a distinguished center of excellence in the revered world of polo.
Polo arrived in Jaipur in the late 19th century when Lieutenant General His Highness Saramad-i-Raja-i-Hindustan Raj Rajendra Maharajadhiraj Shri Sir Sawai Man Singh II of Jaipur laid the foundation of his passion for the sport on these grounds—renowned for being as smooth as a billiards table!
The Maharaja’s love for polo led him to construct a polo ground near Rambagh Palace. A nine-goal legend, the Maharaja’s tales of prowess as a rider and polo player still resonate in polo circles today.
Brigadier Maharaja Sawai Bhawani Singh Bahadur MVC would accompany his father to the polo grounds as a child, and it was perhaps here that he developed his own love for the sport. He became well-known for organizing some of the most prestigious polo events and tournaments across India.
Maharaja Sawai Bhawani Singh Ji invited the world to Jaipur, making significant contributions to polo in India. Leading international figures, including Jacqueline Kennedy, the Presidents and Prime Ministers of India and the U.S.S.R., and HRH Princess Diana, attended matches in Jaipur. HRH The Prince of Wales is among those who played polo here.
